Access to Arts

Northwest Pilot Project - Access to the artsIn 1987 NWPP identified a desire for low-income, isolated seniors to attend cultural events and piloted a new program to fill this need.  Seniors are often hampered by the cost of performance tickets, lack of transportation to events, and mobility issues.  Access to the Arts was developed and coordinated by volunteers who received donated tickets through NWPP from individuals, businesses and arts groups.

In 1990, at a White House ceremony, NWPPP received the 1990 President's Volunteer Action Award for our Access to the Arts program.  This award is presented annually to organizations and individuals for "outstanding and innovative volunteer efforts".

Today after twenty-two years, the Access to the Arts program is still keeping seniors connected to the arts.  From July 2008 through June 2009 we have received donations of tickets from 17 arts/performance organizations and 4 individuals.  This is a total of 406 tickets for our clients to attend 42 concerts, performances or events.

Our clients are very appreciative of the chance to enjoy the arts and many of them voice how much this program means to them. One man said, "It gives us an opportunity to socialize and fight off the terrible feeling of isolation.  It gives us an hour or so to forget our immediate situation and be transported to a place of wonder and excitement. Thank you all so much!"

Our deepest appreciation goes to the individuals and organizations that have so generously supported this program with tickets and cash donations.  If you have tickets you cannot use or can donate tickets please contact Wendy at wendy@nwpilotproject.org or 503-478-6877.
